Westphal continues the manufacturing of core analysis instrumentation (e.g. permeability and resistivity anisotropy measured on cubes, pressure influence on permeability, porosity, and resistivity, mercury capillary pressure curve at ambient conditions and under hydrostatic load up to 500 bar, gas/brine or oil/brine capillary pressure data by porous plate).

Additionally we provide the knowledge for the development of special core analysis instrumentation according to client's request.develop and produce special equipment for rock physics services. We are also available for special machine tool development for rock physics.

We have developed and produced the following equiment or components:

Measuring Units for Core Analysis

Steady-State-Permeameter: Semi-automated computer controlled instrument for the determination of gas permeabilities as outlined in the API recommended practice RP 27. The FANCHER-type core holder is delivered with rubber buffers for plugs of 100 mm in length and 1", 30 mm, and 40 mm diameter respectively. Additionally buffers for cubes of 30 and 40 mm edge length are provided.
Apparent and KLINKENBERG-corrected gaspermeability is displayed continuously. Flow rate is checked for laminar conditions. Measuring range 10-18 to 5*10-12 m² (=0,001 mD to 5 Darcy)

ARCHIMEDES porosity meter (buoyancy method): Consisting of balance with under floor weighing device, core saturation system and vacuumpump.

Core holder for the determination of formation resistivity factor and cementation exponent: Additionally to the components of the porosimeter a 4-electrode-resitivity meter and adequate core holder is necessary.

Mercury capillary pressure instrument (2000 psi = ca. 140 bars): Data are basis for the calculation of pore entry radii. Furthermore permeabilities of non-geometric samples (e.g. cuttings) are estimated. The run of relative permeability curves is calculated from pore size distribution and measured end points.

Gas/water-capillary pressure by porous plate (up to 2.5 bars): The minimized dead volume of this device reduces artefacts caused by temperature change and condensation. On request an electric lead through is available for the determination of saturation exponents.

Measuring Components for Core Analysis

FANCHER-type core holder: System RIECKMANN for the determination of gas and liquid permeabilities under ambient conditions (room temperature and 12 bars sleeve pressure). Basis of this core holder is a rubber buffer with a cross section which is adjusted to the plug dimensions. The FANCHER-type core holder is delivered with rubber buffers for plugs of 100 mm in length and 1", 30 mm, and 40 mm in diameter respectively. Additionally buffers for cubes of 30 and 40 mm edge length are provided.

FANCHER-type high pressure core holder: System RIECKMANN/MUCK for the determination of gas permeabilities under triaxial (hydrostatic) load up to 600 bars. Again buffers for the measurement of cubes are available.
